K-18 and I-70 Interchange Project in Geary County

Page last updated: December 08, 2023

Project Description

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is updating the K-18 and I-70 Interchange project in Geary County. Interchange improvements were identified as a high priority through KDOT’s Local Consult process in 2019. The existing stop sign design can be confusing for drivers. During peak weekday traffic periods, as well as Kansas State University football gamedays, traffic extends back onto I-70 mainline presenting safety concerns. In the last five years, there have been several near fatalities that have raised concerns about the existing interchange design.

KDOT studied several options to improve the intersection from I-70 eastbound to K-18 northbound, and ultimately a flyover bridge design has been identified as the preferred option. The flyover bridge will span over the existing bridge across I-70. Additional improvements are slated for the southbound to westbound I-70 on ramp. The project will also update the north terminal of the interchange, add a two-mile auxiliary lane on I-70 (eastbound only), and more.

New Flyover Design

K-18/I-70 Flyover Option Project Map
  • Accommodates future traffic projections
  • Reduces congestion
  • Accommodates gameday traffic
  • Accommodates freight
  • Has less impacts to nearby landowners and does not displace the existing fire station
  • Allows drivers to maintain a safe and consistent speed
  • Provides improved driving conditions at the K-18/Boller Rd intersection
  • Saves the existing bridge, which is in good condition and has significant remaining service life and allows for movement across I-70
  • Lowers the amount of lane closure occurrences during construction

Project Timeline

This IKE Modernization project was approved for the construction pipeline in August 2022 by Governor Kelly.

  • Discovery Phase: completed in 2023
  • Preliminary Design: will be completed in 2023
  • Public Involvement: opportunities in late 2023
  • Final Design: will be completed in early 2025
  • Construction: beginning in 2025 and completion expected in 2026

The existing interchange, including the existing bridge, will remain open both through and after construction. Construction is expected to have a minimal impact on traffic. Traffic on I-70 will have minor to moderate impact. The project was originally scheduled for a September 2024 letting (process to begin receiving bids for construction) as a partial loop ramp. After community engagement with stakeholders and a new traffic study which showed increased user numbers after the height of the pandemic, KDOT changed the scope of the project.
