The U.S. 40 diverging diamond interchange between John Wesley Drive and George Williams Way is now open. The video above shows the new interchange, which includes the K-10 on and off ramps, starting east of K-10 and moving west to John Wesley Drive.
KDOT’s West Lawrence U.S. 40 (6th Street) and K-10 Interchange Improvements Project reconfigured the existing interchange into a diverging diamond interchange (DDI). A DDI enhances safety and mobility by reducing potential crash points at intersections and by allowing more vehicles to move through the intersection. The interchange includes a sidewalk with barriers down the center of the bridge to provide protection for pedestrians. The DDI is a design innovation that improves safety and mobility, often at a much lower cost, compared to conventional interchange designs. The benefits include:

KDOT worked to deliver this project in phases to reduce the amount of time the interchange would be closed to traffic.
