Project Description

KDOT’s West Lawrence U.S. 40 (6th Street) and K-10 Interchange Improvements Project reconfigured the existing interchange into a diverging diamond interchange (DDI). A DDI enhances safety and mobility by reducing potential crash points at intersections and by allowing more vehicles to move through the intersection. The interchange includes a sidewalk with barriers down the center of the bridge to provide protection for pedestrians. The DDI is a design innovation that improves safety and mobility, often at a much lower cost, compared to conventional interchange designs. The benefits include:

  • Safe and convenient bridge crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Traffic signals that can be activated by pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Sidewalk with barriers to cross the bridge.

More information on DDI benefits can be found on the Federal Highway Administration’s DDI handout.

Project Phasing

KDOT worked to deliver this project in phases to reduce the amount of time the interchange would be closed to traffic.
