U.S. 54 Bridge (025) over the Walnut River

Project Description

The Kansas Depart of Transportation (KDOT) Project, U.S. 54 bridge (025) over the Walnut River, involves the replacement of the U.S. 54 bridge (025) over the Walnut River, on the eastern edge of El Dorado. The U.S. 54 bridge (025) and the project site are approximately 0.55 miles east of the north junction of U.S. 54 and U.S. 77. As U.S. 54 spans the joining of the Walnut River and West Branch Walnut River, a BNSF railroad overpass bridge crosses U.S. 54 from north to south, posing project constraints for the future replacement design.

KDOT implemented this Discovery Phase Project to begin investigating various alternatives in coordination with project stakeholders City of El Dorado, Butler County and BNSF. Preliminary Design and Final Design Phases will follow the selection of a preferred alternative as developed in this project phase.

The proposed U.S. 54 bridge lanes would be built to the south of the existing U.S. 54 lanes. This would allow for the current U.S. 54 section to stay open during construction.

The purpose and need of the project are the effective and efficient replacement of the U.S. 54 bridge (025) with a sustainable design that addresses the functional and structural needs of KDOT, Butler County, El Dorado and the greater region.
